A couple of weeks ago, I discovered the 2015 Pantone Challenge at On the Windy Side. Entering it was but a fleeting thought, until my friend Janeen (from Quilt Art Designs) entered a piece….and because imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I decided to enter as well. The 2015 Pantone color is Marsala: Die Farbe für Pantone 2015 ist Marsala: I happened to have recently completed a piece that has marsala in it (even though it does not look exactly like that in the photo): Ich habe vor kurzem einen Wandbehang fertiggestellt – der hat sehr viel “Marsala” (im Photo sieht man die Farbe nicht so gut): This wall hanging is one of Janeen’s patterns and can be found in the newest edition of her magazine. The block is 14 in x 14 in; I called it “Singing in the Rain at Night”. Das Muster ist von Janeen und ist in ihrem neuen Magazin. Der Wandbehang ist 35.5 cm x 35.5 cm; ich habe ihn “Singing in the Rain at Night” (Abends im Regen Singen). These master pieces will be judged by experts, but there will also be a prize for viewer’s choice. The voting has not started yet, but soon! So, maybe some of you will vote for me? Die Kunstwerke werden von Experten bewertet, aber es gibt auch einen Preis für den Favoriten der Zuschauer. Die Stimmabgabe hat noch nicht begonnen, aber bald! Vielleicht wählt ihr für mich?
And, while you’re here – why don’t you hop over to my Craftsy shop for some of my paper piecing patterns?

I think Marsala is a tough color to incorporate into my work. You’ve done a nice job here using it, and I especially like the other colors in your palette to highlight it. : )

Marsala IS a tough color to incorporate for me too. I do not want to take too much credit for this; the colors just happened….that you for your kind words.

I’m with you – wasn’t sure I was terribly fond of it at first either; in this piece it happens to work (or so I think!)

What a beautiful quilt – and so original too. Yes, Marsala is a challenging colour, but you’ve used it so well. Thank you so much for linking up with Sew Cute Tuesday, and for introducing me to Janeen’s blog too – I’m tempted!

Lovely design, Irene. Are the straight lines free motion quilted?

Yes, the quilting was done in my domestic machine (a rather basic Viking); I just used the sides of my foot as a guide….

What sort of foot was it, and were the feed dogs dropped or stitch length on zero?

This is such a beautiful little mini! I love the birds and the way you’ve made the marsala seem very dramatic in this quilt. And the quilting really adds to the moodiness as well. Lovely work!
