I often work with small pieces of fabric; in addition, I am participating in the 365 Challenge Quilt this year. Both these adventures often require fabrics cut to various increments of 16ths.  Most rulers, quilting or otherwise show measurements as small as 8ths but not any smaller…

Ich arbeite oft mit sehr kleinen Stückchen von Stoff; und ich nehme auch an der “365 Challenge Quilt” teil.  In beiden Situationen brauch ich oft Stoff Stücke die auf 16el (Zoll) geschnitten werden müssen.  Die meisten Patchwork Lineale zeigen nur Masse bis auf 8el aber nicht kleiner…. 

After some research, I found a ruler (yes, just one!) that shows that small measurement – it is called the “Marsha McCloskey’s Feathered Star Ruler” and the measurements shown go from 3/4″ to 4 5/16″.

Ich habe ein wenig recherchiert und habe ein Lineal (ja, nur eines!) entdeckt, dass diese kleinen Masse anführt.  Es ist das “Marsha McCloskey’s Feathered Star Ruler”; die Masse da drauf reichen von 3/4″ bis zu 4 15/16″ (alle Masse in Zoll).

IMG_0680The ruler comes with a short sheet of instructions, and it really does not take long to get the hang of it. The added benefit, in my opinion, is that you become really proficient with fractions VERY fast!  Because of the way the ruler is set up, you can become much faster if you know approximately where your16ths fall (for example, that 5/16″ are just over 1/4″).

Mit dem Lineal bekommt man eine Seite mit Instruktionen, und es hat für mich nicht lange gedauert die Handhabung zu lernen.  Ein zusätzlicher Vorteil ist das man sehr schnell Bruchzahlen lernt! Aufgrund der Art wie das Lineal entworfen ist, kann man viel schneller mit der Handhabung werden, wenn man weiss wo das gebrauchte 16el ist (zum Beispiel ist es von Vorteil zu wissen dass 5/16″ klapp grösser als 1/4″ sind).

The ruler has four sections, which makes the 16th easier to see.  It is set up so that each quadrant identifies whole, eighth, quarter, and half inch increments and the associated 16ths. The ruler is set up to cut squares (i.e. 1 9/16″ by 1 9/16″) but it is not hard to cut rectangles as well – one of the blocks in the 365 Challenge Quilt a couple of days ago required rectangles that measured 1 9/16″ x 3 11/16″.

Es gibt auf dem Lineal vier Quadranten.  Das heisst das die 16el sehr viel leichter zu sehen sind, als wenn sie alle eng zusammen wären.  Jeder Quadrant zeigt ganze, achtel, viertel und halbe Zoll, und die damit verbundenen 16el.  Das Lineal wurde für Quadrate entworfen (z.B. 1 9/16″ x 1 9/16″) aber es ist wirklich nicht schwer auch Rechtecke zu schneiden.  Einer der Blöcke für die 365 Challenge Quilt vor ein paar Tagen brauchte Stücke die 1 9/16″ x 3 11/16″ gross waren.

Just for the record, I am not in any way associated with Ms. McCloskey, I purchased the ruler on my own.  I am generally not a “gadget-y” person, but I think I will not regret this purchase!

Nur zur Information, ich bin in keiner weise mit Ms. Mccluskey verbunden, und habe das Lineal selber gekauft.  Generell kaufe/verwende ich nur grundlegende Werkzeuge (fast nie spezial Lineale usw.) aber ich glaube nicht das ich diesen Kauf bereuen werde.
