I am lucky enough to be invited to participate in the Cloud9 New Block Blog Hop again this year (I guess that *might* mean I behaved myself last year?).
Cloud9 provided several of us (a lot of us!) a fat quarter of each of these solids
The challenge was to come up with an original block, and then write a tutorial bout it on a predetermined date. My date is today.
And here is my block:
Und hier ist mein Block:
The block is paper pieced, and VERY easy – very suitable for a beginner. The paper piecing pattern (& instructions) can be downloaded here. The link takes you to my Craftsy shop, but the pattern is free….I link my free patterns on Craftsy as well, as this allows me to conserve storage space.
Next, I want to show you a couple of layouts, all done with this block:
If I gave you an entire paper piecing tutorial here, this post would go on for days….so, I have derived a compromise: Here is a Paper Piecing Tutorial (in .pdf) that you can either print out or download to your tablet. It takes you step-by-step through how to paper piece. And below, are some photos of how I made this block – they may help you if you get stuck along the way.
This block consists of four sections – once you have constructed each of the sections, sew them together (according to the instructions). Here is a tip: Do not remove the paper before you sew the sections together. Sew them together, and make sure that the lines on the pattern pieces line up properly (first photo below). Then, remove paper from the seam section only (second photo below); this will allow you to iron the pieces better and make them fit together more accurately.
After I have completed my block(s), I still don’t remove the paper. I sew my blocks into rows and then I take the paper off (after I have trimmed the rows to their proper size).
And here is a whole quilt pattern I am developing; the pattern will be for sale shortly and will include four sizes (Baby, Lap, Full & Queen) and detailed instructions.
Last (but definitely not least) I want to thank today’s host Yvonne (Quilting Jetgirl), tomorrow’s host Cheryl (Meadow Mist Designs) and Wednesday’s host Stephanie (Late Night Quilter) for organizing and hosting this little get-together, and of course Cloud9 for the beautiful fabrics. Below is a list of all of us posting today. Visit their blogs and then don’t forget to check out the others tomorrow and Wednesday.
For those of you waiting for the BOM block for September (Australia), please check back tomorrow – it will be posted overnight!
I’m in awe of all the paper piecing that happened on this hop. Nice job!

Great block! It creates such lovely designs in a quilt. The test for me is always how flexible a block is to creating multiple designs and yours simply excels! Awesome job.

Very nice block! I’ve only sewn a couple of paper pieced blocks but I think I could sew this one. Thanks. I also like that you gave different layouts of how the quilt would look using your pattern and arranging them differently.
