I am a news junkie as well as a politics junkie. But today, CNN as well as all other major channels will be silent in our house.
In the last few weeks, I feel as if I have been defending myself constantly – so let me emphasize again: there have been several Presidents in the last three decades that I have disagreed with politically, and also some where I have disagreed with their personal views. But I have always been confident that they believed in their philosophies, in this country; that they had good intentions and that they respected the Office in which they were about to enter. Not this time – the President Elect does not believe in anything other than promoting himself and his interests.
I always accepted the Election results (from the most local elections to the presidential one) and just hoped that next time, my candidate would win. I have never felt despair, fear, concern and true, deep sadness – until now.
The man this country has elected to be its President, is at best, an opportunistic liar and at worse a sexual predator, crook and masochist. I will not be watching because while I respect the office of the President and because I respect the office of the President I cannot respect the man. As I have said before, I am an immigrant, a woman, a veteran, a small business owner – for all of those reasons I cannot support this President. I will stand with refugees, the disabled, the LGBTQ community, Muslims, Latinos and every other group that has been vilified on Masse….
On another but related note, I have been following the confirmation hearings closely and it is stunning to me of how unqualified the vast majority of these cabinet candidates are: Rick Perry (Nominee for Energy) did not know that his Department is responsible for the nuclear weapons, Betsy DeVos (Nominee for Education) does not know that there is a federal law requiring all schools to provide equal education for disabled children, Rex Tillerson (Nominee for State) will not recuse himself for matters involving Exxon, Steven Mnuchin (Candidate for Treasury) as well as several others have significant financial issues – these are just some of the concerns. All of the facts listed above I knew, and I am by no means more knowledgeable than anyone else. You would think that a Nominee for a cabinet position would AT THE VERY LEAST read up on some basic information in the department which they are about to lead – apparently, none of them did.
My turning the news channels off today is not so much a form of protest as it is a recognition that I want the last swearing in I saw be one where I felt hope, optimism and confidence in what this country stands for and who this country stands by.

I completely agree with your opinions and your decision – I, too, have turned off the news … and Facebook and any other source of political input. Just does my blood pressure no good at all and inflicts misery. Sigh.

I am in the minority – I am very thankful for a change. Our new President is by no means a perfect human being – none of us are – but to me he’s a better option that our other choice. I hope we’re both very pleasantly surprised at the end of his term.

Well, I have to agree with Lisa. Question.. Did you know everything (anything) about any of the jobs that you had when you first started. I know that I didn’t. Do you know that our newly elected is only going to take $1.00 for all pay while he is in office? Great savings for this country, should help lower the debt. Or that he didn’t spend all the $’s allocated for the ceremonies today and what was left over was given to the treasury? Does that sound like a man thinking of only himself?

Good morning Shirley,
One of the things I value the most is that people like you and I, people with different perspectives, can discuss and voice our opinions, politely and respectfully to each other, without hurling insults at one another and without trying to tear each other down. We will probably not change each other’s opinions, but if we keep an open mind we might better understand each other’s opinions…..
Of course no one knows all the minutia of a new job on day one. But, I will give you an example of what I was talking about: if you Google the Department of Energy, in the vey first sentence it says that they are responsible for nuclear weapons…..so no, I don’t expect them to know everything, but I do expect them to have a baseline of knowledge and I do expect them to have done at least as much reading up on their department as a high school student on a Social Studies Test.
I am VERY glad you wrote, because only if we talk to each other can we co-exist in piece and with understanding one another.

Hi,
I’m not sure that much is tough in Social Studies classes any more.
Granddaughter was taught how to use the microwave in Home Ec.–no using of the stove to make anything! Sad…
.What I do know is that two people with the same job will have completely different ways they see and do the job..
Example: Myself and another being were both card-holding mechanics and he could read and tell you all about the technical stuff but when he had to put it into practice–couldn’t, I, on the other hand could do the work but the reading of the technical stuff, and telling you how or why it was to work –not so much.. Understood, but could not tell you why.
I think that the President an his appointees are a lot like principals…knows stuff but it is the teacher – under him– that does the work. So, lets hope that the appointees get the right people to help with their jobs.
