Bee Inspired – in October

Our queen for the month is Kate.  She is having significant mobility difficulties at the moment.  I am not disclosing this to gossip, but rather to illustrate how we have all become “real” friends, even though we have never met (or even spoken to each other).

Unsere Königin für den Monat ist Kate. Sie hat derzeit erhebliche Mobilitätsschwierigkeiten. Ich verrate das nicht um zu klatschen, sondern um zu illustrieren, wie wir alle zu “echten” Freundinnen geworden sind, obwohl wir uns nie begegnet sind (und auch nie miteinander gesprochen haben).

Because Kate is not able to sew or type currently, several bee members volunteered to help with making her blocks and publishing her posts!  Pretty awesome, huh?

Da Kate momentan nicht nähen oder den Computer benutzen kann, meldeten sich mehrere unserer Mitglieder freiwillig, um ihre Blöcke zu nähen und ihre Beiträge zu veröffentlichen! Ziemlich großartig, nicht wahr?

These two blocks are constructed out of only two (2 1/2″) strips of fabric….genius!

Diese zwei Blöcke sind aus nur zwei (2 1/2 “) Stoffstreifen konstruiert …. genial!

I hope Kate likes them, and I hope she can get back to doing the things she loves to do and wants to do soon!

Bee Inspired! – I am sharing my reign 😮

I told you a couple of days ago that I was the Queen Bee in September (in my online, international bee).  What I did not disclose, is that I am sharing my reign with Janice.

Ich habe dir vor ein paar Tagen gesagt, dass ich im September die “Königin” bin (in meiner internationalen Online-Quilt-Gruppe). Was ich nicht offengelegt habe, ist, dass ich meine Herrschaft mit Janice teile…. 

Janice requested a house block.  We could chose any color we wanted and any fabrics we wanted as Lon as the block reads predominantly one color.  She also mentioned that she had made a red block that she was not particularly fond of at the end – this block:

Bee Inspired – for Emily

Emily wants a paper-pieced (yeah!) red, white and blue star in her month.  This pattern is from Wombat Quilts (Emily got permission for us to use it) – we all like it a lot!

Emily will einen rot-weiß-blauen Stern in ihrem Monat. Dieses Muster stammt von Wombat Quilts (Emily hat Erlaubnis bekommen, es zu benutzen) – uns gefällt er sehr!

My block is done (in the first week no less!) and will be on it’s way to Emily soon.

Mein Block ist fertig (in der ersten Woche!) und wird bald auf dem Weg zu Emily sein.

 

International Bee Queens (yes, two of them)

My international bee has had two queens this month – Jennifer wanted shamrocks for her Irish inspired quilt, and Paige requested modified I-spy blocks for a girls’ charity project….

Meine internationale Gruppe hatte diesen Monat zwei Königinnen – Jennifer wollte Kleeblätter für ihre irisch inspirierte Steppdecke, und Paige ersuchte modifizierte I-Spy-Blöcke für ein Wohltätigkeitsprojekt für Mädchen ….

Each of them only requested one block, but apparently all other participants in my bee are over-achievers and made several of each! No way I could let that challenge go unmatched!

Jede von ihnen hat nur einen Block angefordert, aber anscheinend sind alle anderen Teilnehmer meiner Biene sehr ehrgeizig und haben mehrere von jedem gemacht! Auf keinen Fall könnte ich diese Herausforderung unbeantwortet lassen!

And so, here they are:  three shamrocks for Jennifer, and two I-spy blocks for Paige.

A special thank-you to Paige:  I have had this Minnie Mouse fabric remnant forever, and not known what to do with it (I am not into themed fabrics at all).  This block was perfect for it, since the quilts will go to teenage girls!

Ich bin Paige ganz besonders dankbar: Ich hatte diesen Minnie Mouse Stoffrest schon sehr lange und wusste nicht, was ich damit anfangen sollte (ich verwende Themenstoffe nie!). Dieser Block war perfekt dafür, da die Steppdecken an Mädchen gehen werden!

“Skinny” Pana Cotta

Several of my friends are on diets and are always on the lookout for “skinny” (low fat/ low carb/low sugar or all three) recipes.  Today’s recipe is for Panna Cotta, which is a custard-like dessert.  It does not contain eggs and is usually made of cream, sugar and a thickening agent.  This recipe also happens to be gluten-free and dairy free.

Einige meiner Freunde sind auf Diät und sind immer auf der Suche nach “dünnen” (fettarm / Low Carb / wenig Zucker oder alle drei) Rezepten. Das heutige Rezept ist für Panna Cotta, ein Pudding-ähnliches Dessert. Es enthält keine Eier und wird normalerweise aus Sahne, Zucker und einem Verdickungsmittel hergestellt. Mein Rezept ist auch glutenfrei und enthält keine Milchprodukte.

Ingredients

Zutaten

3 cups of regular (unflavored) sugar free almond milk
2 Envelopes unflavored Gelatin
2/3 – 3/4 cup Splenda (if you prefer a different sweetener, use
the the equivalent of 2/3 – 3/4 cup sugar)
1/4 cup of a fruit spread; I used Welch’s Naturals.

705 ml Mandel Milch (ungesüsst)
3 Päckchen Gelatine
230g – 250g Splenda (wenn Sie einen anderen Süßstoff bevorzugen, verwenden Sie
das äquivalent von 2/3 – 3/4 Tasse Zucker)
ca. 100g Fruchtaufstrich/Marmelade (mit reduziertem Zucker)

Preparation:

Place half of the almond milk and the gelatin in a pan; heat on low.
Stir constantly until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
Add the sweetener and stir to dissolve.
Remove from the heat and add the remaining almond milk.
Put 2 tsp of fruit spread on the bottom of six ramekins or small bowls. Pour the almond milk mixture slowly into the ramekins (as to not disturb the fruit spread). Chill until well set (approx. 3 hours) or overnight.

Zubereitung:

Die halbe Mandelmilch und Gelatine in einem Topf auf mittlere Hitze erwärmen, bis die Gelatine komplett aufgelöst ist. (man muss ständig rühren).
Den Süßstoff hinzufügen und so lange rühren bis er auch aufgelöst ist.
Von dem Herd nehmen und die restliche Mandelmilch hinzufügen.
Zwei Tl Marmelade in den Boden von sechs Schüsselchen geben, und dann die Mandel Milch Mischung langsam in die Schüsselchen giessen.  Die Schüsselchen in den Kühlschrank stellen und dort mindestens drei Stunden kühlen lassen.

NOTE:  If you want to further reduce the points/calorie value, use fresh fruit in the bottom of your ramekins instead of fruit spread.

Hinweis: Wenn Sie die Punkte / Kalorienwerte weiter reduzieren möchten, verwenden Sie frisches Obst auf dem Boden Ihrer Schüsselchen anstelle von Fruchtaufstrich.

Weight Watchers Points: 3/portion (The fruit spread is two points, so if you replace that with fresh fruit, the whole dessert drops to one point).

Bee Inspired – for Emily

When Emily requested a “book shelf” block with a theme, I knew immediately that mine was going to be a Harry Potter block (unless someone else snapped up the idea first).  Luckily, no one did and I was able to do it.

Als Emily einen “Bücherregal” -Block mit einem Thema anforderte, wusste ich sofort, dass meiner ein Harry-Potter-Block sein würde (es sei denn, jemand anderer hatte die Idee zuerst aufgenommen). Zum Glück war ich die einzige (oder die erste?) die diese Idee hatte….

I decided to print the book spines and then construct each of the books out of a different fabric.  Each book is also a different width (since each of the books has a vastly different number of pages).

Ich beschloss, die Buchrücken zu drucken und dann jedes der Bücher aus einem anderen Stoff zu konstruieren. Jedes Buch hat auch eine andere Breite (da jedes der Bücher eine sehr unterschiedliche Anzahl von Seiten hat).

Designing the book spines was a lot of fun (and also VERY time consuming).  Everything from the font, the colors, the design elements, the positioning of each element or text  became major decisions as I obsessed over them.  I am satisfied with the result, given the limitations of my printer…..I would have liked to incorporate the color of the fabric into my spines, but my printer cannot handle that volume of color saturation on fabric.

Die Gestaltung der Buchrücken hat viel Spaß gemacht (und war auch sehr zeitaufwendig). Alles von der Schriftart, den Farben, den Designelementen, der Positionierung jedes Elements oder Textes waren sehr wichtige Entscheidungen! Ich bin mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden, angesichts der Einschränkungen meines Druckers ….. Ich hätte gerne die Farbe des Stoffes in meine Buchrücken integriert, aber mein Drucker kann diese Menge von Farbsättigung auf Stoff nicht verarbeiten.

I left Emily a little extra fabric on the top and the right side so she can trim the block and make it fit into her quilt.  I do hope she likes it….(and forgives my tardiness)

Ich habe Emily ein wenig extra Stoff oben und auch rechts gelassen, damit sie den Block so zuschneiden kann wie sie ihn braucht. Ich hoffe wirklich, er gefällt ihr und sie vergibt meine Verspätung.

A vintage Santa

I usually don’t get attached to the quilts I longarm for other people, but there are some memorable ones (in good and not-so-good ways).  My friend Nancy E. gave me a wallhanging to longarm recently that I really, really, really like.  This is particularly funny because it so NOT my style……

Normalerweise baue ich keine emotionale Beziehung an die Quilts, die ich für andere Leute ergreife, aber es gibt einige denkwürdige (auf gute und nicht so gute Weise). Meine Freundin Nancy E. hat mir kürzlich einen Wandbehang zum Longarm gegeben, den ich wirklich sehr mag. Das ist besonders bemerkenswert, weil er gar nicht mein Stil ist (?!)

 

I quilted some gigantic snowflakes, in irregular intervals into the background….

Ich habe in den Hintergrund riesige Schneeflocken gequiltet, in unregelmässigen Intervallen.

Most of the quilting is fairly simple….

Der Großteil ist sehr einfach gequiltet (ist das überhaupt ein Wort????)

There are two areas that I took extra time for; one of them is the borders.  I quilted Christmas trees into the green borders and peppermints into the red one.

Es gibt zwei Flächen wo ich dachte dass ein wenig mehr Detail angepasst war. Die eine  ist die Umrandung; ich habe in die grüne Umrandung Bäume gequiltet, und in die rote Pfefferminz Bonbons.

I also went with more detail in the face and beard.  Nancy told me that it was her mom who made this piece many, many years ago.  I am truly impressed by the way she crafted the face – it has expression and the eyes seem to be full of life…

Die zweite Fläche ist das Gesicht und der Bart.  Nancy hat mir erzählt das der Nikolaus von ihrer Mamma (vor vielen Jahren) genäht wurde. Ich bin wirklich beeindruckt von der Art, wie sie das Gesicht gestaltete – es hat einen Ausdruck und die Augen scheinen voller Leben zu sein.

Bee Inspired! – in December

Each month I say “I love this block!”, and each month I mean it.  This month’s block and the quilt that Paige designed around it is one of my all-time favorites….

Jeden Monat sage ich “mir gefällt dieser Block sehr” und jedes mal meine ich das auch ernstlich.  Aber in diesem Monat ist der Block den Paige entworfen hat, wirklich einer meiner Favoriten…..

I think I may be asking Paige for permission to make this quilt – it is organic, it is interesting, it is imaginative and it is beautiful!

Ich glaube ich werde Paige fragen ob ich dieses Design kopieren darf – dieser Quilt ist interessant, Umwelt-freundlich, und sehr sehr schön!

There are no red/rust bottoms on my trees because the fabric never arrived…Paige will add the red clay when the trees arrive at there farm in South Carolina.

Meine Bäume haben keine Erde weil der Stoff dafür nie angekommen ist.  Paige wird sie unten dran nähen wenn die Bäume bei ihr in South Carolina ankommen….

Bee Inspired! – in February

Sue requested an simple and quick block for her month.  I like this block a lot!  The instructions, as it relates to color, where to use a medium in the center, a cream for the background and another medium for the corners, with the option of choosing the same fabric for the center and the corners).

Sue hat sich einen einfachen und schnellen Block gewünscht.  Mir gefällt dieser Block sehr! Die Anweisungen, wie es sich auf die Farbe bezieht, waren dass man im Zentrum  einen mitteldunklere Farbe wählen soll, ein creme für den Hintergrund und einen anderen mitteldunkleren Stoff für die Ecken, mit der Option, den gleichen Stoff für die Mitte und die Ecken zu wählen). …. 

I fussy cut the focus fabrics that the vine would be prominent and the flowers would be cut off as little as possible.  Per Sue’s example, the cream background is lighter and the strip background fabric is a darker cream/light tan.  The block overall is a little darker than I anticipated, but I do hope that it suits Sue.

Ich habe den Stoff für das Zentrum so geschnitten, dass man die Rebe in der Mitte sieht, und dass die Blümchen nicht zu schlimm zerschnitten sind.  Sue’s Vorbild hat einen Hintergrund der ein wenig heller ist als der Hintergrund in den Streifen.  Der Block (mit meinen Stoffwahlen) ist ein wenig dunkler als ich ihn mir vorgestellt habe, aber ich hoffe er gefällt Sue.

I think this is a good place to say something I have realized since I started participating in an online bee:  in a way, this is very liberating.  I like you all, and I do want you to like the blocks I make, but – because we all do not know each other very well or in person, it is easier to choose fabrics/colors uninhibited….colors I would usually not put together.  If I want to be honest with myself, for every block I send to any one of you, there are two or three others that end up in my orphan box.  One of these days I will make an “Ugly Quilt” with all those blocks (it will probably end up being King Size!)

Ich denke, ich kann jetzt etwas sagen dass ich seit ich an einer Online Bee teilnehme realisiert habe: in einer gewissen Weise ist das ganze online-bee Ding sehr befreiend.  Ich habe Euch alle ganz gern und ich möchte schon dass ihr die Blöcke mögt, die ich nähe, aber – weil wir alle einander nicht sehr gut und auch nicht persönlich kennen, ist es einfacher, Stoffe / Farben ungehemmt auszuwählen …. Farben die ich normalerweise nicht zusammenstellen würde. Wenn ich ehrlich mit mir selbst sein will, muss ich gestehen dass ich für jeden Block, den ich Euch schicke, gibt es zwei oder drei andere, die in meiner Waisen-Box enden. Irgendwann einmal werde ich eine “hässliche Quilt” mit all diesen Blöcken nähen (es wird wahrscheinlich eine sehr grosse werden!).
