One of the two community service projects at our Guild (Tarheel Quilters Guild) is our local Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  We make lap quilts for hospitalized veterans.  A few months ago, our liaison at the VA hospital approached us with the following dilemma:  when a veteran passes away, his/her body is placed on a gurney and taken downstairs to the morgue.  Often, the blankets or other coverings available are not large enough to cover the veteran’s remains.  So, the liaison asked if we could make a covering large enough to conceal the entire gurney.  We decided to make two.

The team that I was on consisted of my friend Nancy E. and myself.  Nancy made the pall, and I quilted it (a different team made the other one).

This was quite a project: the pall is 6ft wide and 12 ft. long (72″ x 140″ or 183cm x 366cm).  Nancy accomplished her part in no time at all (it took her less than a week!!).  Mine took a bit longer; when the quilting was done, I gave it back to nancy and she put on the binding in ONE evening! I swear, sometimes I think she has a small army of quilting fairies hidden away somewhere….

There are VERY few photos of Nancy in existence, and as she is currently out-of-state visiting family, I cannot even go take one – so, I did the next best thing: I borrowed one (one of three available) from Facebook!

We are quite proud of the pall, and if I want to be honest, most of the credit should go to Nancy.  We hope that it gives the veterans that lay under it a measure of dignity.

Pictured is the first dollar I made quilting (long arm service).  I bought my machine early March; it arrived and was assembled in late March.  I began practicing, and soon had my choice of machine confirmed!
I spent almost two days at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival (in February 2013) comparing the machines exhibited there (Gammill, Inova, Handi Quilter, Nolting, Tin Lizzie, APQS, Baby Lock).  Charlie was there with me to supervise my questions and answers in the technical areas, and then translate the various dealers’ answers into language that I (as an intensely non-technical person) could understand…
I love my Handi-Quilter!  I have quilted several charity quilts on it, a bed quilt for our bed, and now my first quilt-for-pay!

The lady I quilted it for was happy with it and that is worth so much to me.  I hope to be able to do a lot more of this kind of work, as it allows me to spend more time at home !
