“Skinny” Pana Cotta

Several of my friends are on diets and are always on the lookout for “skinny” (low fat/ low carb/low sugar or all three) recipes.  Today’s recipe is for Panna Cotta, which is a custard-like dessert.  It does not contain eggs and is usually made of cream, sugar and a thickening agent.  This recipe also happens to be gluten-free and dairy free.

Einige meiner Freunde sind auf Diät und sind immer auf der Suche nach “dünnen” (fettarm / Low Carb / wenig Zucker oder alle drei) Rezepten. Das heutige Rezept ist für Panna Cotta, ein Pudding-ähnliches Dessert. Es enthält keine Eier und wird normalerweise aus Sahne, Zucker und einem Verdickungsmittel hergestellt. Mein Rezept ist auch glutenfrei und enthält keine Milchprodukte.

Ingredients

Zutaten

3 cups of regular (unflavored) sugar free almond milk
2 Envelopes unflavored Gelatin
2/3 – 3/4 cup Splenda (if you prefer a different sweetener, use
the the equivalent of 2/3 – 3/4 cup sugar)
1/4 cup of a fruit spread; I used Welch’s Naturals.

705 ml Mandel Milch (ungesüsst)
3 Päckchen Gelatine
230g – 250g Splenda (wenn Sie einen anderen Süßstoff bevorzugen, verwenden Sie
das äquivalent von 2/3 – 3/4 Tasse Zucker)
ca. 100g Fruchtaufstrich/Marmelade (mit reduziertem Zucker)

Preparation:

Place half of the almond milk and the gelatin in a pan; heat on low.
Stir constantly until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
Add the sweetener and stir to dissolve.
Remove from the heat and add the remaining almond milk.
Put 2 tsp of fruit spread on the bottom of six ramekins or small bowls. Pour the almond milk mixture slowly into the ramekins (as to not disturb the fruit spread). Chill until well set (approx. 3 hours) or overnight.

Zubereitung:

Die halbe Mandelmilch und Gelatine in einem Topf auf mittlere Hitze erwärmen, bis die Gelatine komplett aufgelöst ist. (man muss ständig rühren).
Den Süßstoff hinzufügen und so lange rühren bis er auch aufgelöst ist.
Von dem Herd nehmen und die restliche Mandelmilch hinzufügen.
Zwei Tl Marmelade in den Boden von sechs Schüsselchen geben, und dann die Mandel Milch Mischung langsam in die Schüsselchen giessen.  Die Schüsselchen in den Kühlschrank stellen und dort mindestens drei Stunden kühlen lassen.

NOTE:  If you want to further reduce the points/calorie value, use fresh fruit in the bottom of your ramekins instead of fruit spread.

Hinweis: Wenn Sie die Punkte / Kalorienwerte weiter reduzieren möchten, verwenden Sie frisches Obst auf dem Boden Ihrer Schüsselchen anstelle von Fruchtaufstrich.

Weight Watchers Points: 3/portion (The fruit spread is two points, so if you replace that with fresh fruit, the whole dessert drops to one point).

Ernährungsinformation:

Weight Watchers Punkte: 3 / Portion (Der Fruchtaufstrich ist zwei Punkte, wenn Sie also das mit frischem Obst ersetzen, fällt das ganze Dessert auf einen Punkt).

I usually don’t get attached to the quilts I longarm for other people, but there are some memorable ones (in good and not-so-good ways).  My friend Nancy E. gave me a wallhanging to longarm recently that I really, really, really like.  This is particularly funny because it so NOT my style……

Normalerweise baue ich keine emotionale Beziehung an die Quilts, die ich für andere Leute ergreife, aber es gibt einige denkwürdige (auf gute und nicht so gute Weise). Meine Freundin Nancy E. hat mir kürzlich einen Wandbehang zum Longarm gegeben, den ich wirklich sehr mag. Das ist besonders bemerkenswert, weil er gar nicht mein Stil ist (?!)

 

I quilted some gigantic snowflakes, in irregular intervals into the background….

Ich habe in den Hintergrund riesige Schneeflocken gequiltet, in unregelmässigen Intervallen.

Most of the quilting is fairly simple….

Der Großteil ist sehr einfach gequiltet (ist das überhaupt ein Wort????)

There are two areas that I took extra time for; one of them is the borders.  I quilted Christmas trees into the green borders and peppermints into the red one.

Es gibt zwei Flächen wo ich dachte dass ein wenig mehr Detail angepasst war. Die eine  ist die Umrandung; ich habe in die grüne Umrandung Bäume gequiltet, und in die rote Pfefferminz Bonbons.

I also went with more detail in the face and beard.  Nancy told me that it was her mom who made this piece many, many years ago.  I am truly impressed by the way she crafted the face – it has expression and the eyes seem to be full of life…

Die zweite Fläche ist das Gesicht und der Bart.  Nancy hat mir erzählt das der Nikolaus von ihrer Mamma (vor vielen Jahren) genäht wurde. Ich bin wirklich beeindruckt von der Art, wie sie das Gesicht gestaltete – es hat einen Ausdruck und die Augen scheinen voller Leben zu sein.

There is good news all around!  My 365-challenge-quilt was mailed from Italy to me on October 21st (it had been at a quilt show in Bergamo).  My friend Rita had delivered the rather large box (Rita is tiny) to her local Post Office, with the expectation that the trip back to me would last approximately ten days.

Es gibt eine gute Nachricht!  Mein 365-Challenge-Quilt wurde am 21. Oktober von Italien an mich zurück geschickt (er war auf einer Quilt-Show in Bergamo gewesen). Meine Freundin Rita hatte den ziemlich großen Karton (Rita ist winzig) an ihr örtliches Postamt geliefert, in der Erwartung, dass die Reise zu mir ungefähr zehn Tage dauern würde.

I started tracking the box through the italian postal service’s website as soon as Rita emailed me the relevant information. Just FYI, it is a good idea to do this anytime you send something to/from an international location.  You just google that country’s postal service (i.e. Italian postal service or German postal service or Japanese postal service).  Even though you may not speak the language, most tracking websites are very similar and quite self-explanatory.  Once in a while I would have to plug one of the words I would get in response into Google translate, but overall you get the gist of what they are trying to tell you.

Ich begann, die Box über die Website des italienischen Postdienstes zu verfolgen, sobald Rita mir die tracking Nummer schickte. Nur zur Info, es ist eine gute Idee, dies zu tun, wenn man etwas an/von einem internationalen Standort schickt. Man googelt nur den Postdienst dieses Landes (d. H. Italienischer Postdienst oder deutscher Postdienst oder japanischer Postdiensts). Auch wenn man die Sprache vielleicht nicht spricht, sind die meisten Tracking-Websites sehr ähnlich und ziemlich selbsterklärend. Hin und wieder musste ich eines der Wörter, die ich als Antwort erhalten würde, in Google Translate einstecken, aber insgesamt versteht man was da mitgeteilt wird…..

Anyhow, back to my quilt….on October 28th, the Italian postal service’s website informed me that the package had been processed through the International Processing Center in Milan and turned over to USPS. And that is where it all ended….the package had dropped off the Italian postal service’s tracking system and USPS’ said the tracking number did not exist!

Wie auch immer … am 28. Oktober informierte mich die Website des italienischen Postdienstes, dass das Paket über das International Processing Center in Mailand bearbeitet und an USPS übergeben wurde. Und das ist, wo alles zu einem abruptem Ende kam … das Paket war vom Tracking-System des italienischen Postdienstes abgefallen und USPS sagte, die Tracking-Nummer existiere nicht!.

Around November 10th (a good week after the box was supposed to arrive here) Rita made another trip to her post office, where she was told that the package had been turned over to USPS and therefore could not be traced by them….and still USPS had “no record of this tracking number”.  I put in a search/missing package request through USPS’s website and heard ….. nothing – no email reply, no phone call, no “we are searching for your package” – nothing….crickets.

Um den 10. November herum (eine gute Woche, nachdem die Kiste hier ankommen sollte) machte Rita eine weitere Reise zu ihrer Post, wo ihr gesagt wurde, dass das Paket an USPS übergeben worden war und daher von ihnen nicht zurückverfolgt werden konnte …. und noch USPS hatte “keine Aufzeichnung dieser tracking Nummer”. Ich habe über die Website von USPS eine Anfrage für ein Such- / Vermisstensspaket gestellt und hörte ….. nichts – keine E-Mail-Antwort, kein Telefonanruf, kein “Wir suchen nach Ihrem Paket” – nichts … Stille.

I kept checking the website every morning (USPS updates every 24 hours) and around the end of November, seven weeks after the box was mailed, suddenly I saw this:

Ich habe jeden Morgen die Webseite überprüft (USPS aktualisiert alle 24 Stunden) und gegen Ende November, sieben Wochen nachdem die Box verschickt wurde, sah ich plötzlich folgendes: .

 

Then, again there was DAYS of electronic silence; every morning I kept seeing this same message…

Dann gab es wieder TAGE elektronischen Schweigens; jeden Morgen sah ich dieselbe Botschaft … .

The first days of December, the box turned up in Greensboro, NC; and then finally, yesterday, it was delivered to my house!

Anfang Dezember ist die Box in Greensboro, NC aufgetaucht; und dann, gestern, wurde sie endlich an mein Haus geliefert! .

Now, while I am VERY happy, ecstatic really to have the quilt back, here are a few thoughts:

Ich bin sehr glücklich bin, ekstatisch, den Quilt zurück zu haben, aber hier sind ein paar Gedanken:

1.  When I first posted on social media that the quilt was missing, immediately blame was placed, almost by everyone, on the Italian Postal Service – let me say this loud and clear: USPS LOST MY QUILT not the Italians!
2. This was a big box measuring in excess of 2 feet in each dimension, and weighing approx. 20 lbs.  How do you lose this box, when you can track every little envelope of needles I order online through each and every stop of its journey?
3. USPS, your customer service, frankly sucks! Do you not realize how far a simple email, saying something like “we have received your missing package request and we will do everything we can to find it” would have gone?
4. QUILTERS CARE – I have received sooooooo many messages of support and encouragement from people I don’t even know.  Just the fact that they took the time to write/post is fantastic.

1. Als ich zum ersten Mal in den sozialen Medien schrieb, dass der Quilt vermisst war, wurden sofort von fast allen die italienische Post beschuldigt – lassen Sie mich das laut und deutlich sagen: USPS HAT MEINEN QUILT VERLOREN – nicht die Italiener!

2. Dieses “Paket” war gross, dass die mehr als einen Meter in jeder Dimension maß und ca. 10 kg schwer. Wie verlierst man so ein Paket, wenn man jeden kleinen Umschlag von Nadeln, die ich online bestelle, über jede einzelne Station seiner Reise verfolgen kann?

3. USPS, Ihr Kundenservice, ist wirklich beschießen! Ist Euch nicht klar, wie weit ein einfaches E-Mail mit der Aussage “Wir haben deine fehlende Paketanfrage erhalten und wir werden alles tun, um sie zu finden” gegangen wäre?

4. QUILTERS CARE – Ich habe so viele Nachrichten von Unterstützung und Ermutigung bekommen, von Leuten die ich nicht einmal kenne. Allein die Tatsache, dass sie sich die Zeit zum Schreiben / Posten genommen haben, ist fantastisch.

Flying Geese (four-at-a-time) with directional fabrics

Let me start by saying that this is not a tutorial about how to make flying geese – there are several really good ones out there. These are a couple of good ones:  Connecting Threads, Patchpieces.

Ich muss ganz am Anfang sagen, dass dieses Posting nicht darüber ist wie man “Flying Geese” macht – es gibt mehrere wirklich gute. Hier sind zwei Beispiele: Connecting Threads oder Patchpieces.

When I make flying geese, I never have to make just one – most often I need either two or four of them. And since I use directional fabrics a lot, I found myself reverting to making single units just to make sure that my fabric is oriented correctly.

Wenn ich “flying geese” mache, muss ich niemals nur einen machen – meistens brauche ich entweder zwei oder vier. Und da ich direktionale Stoffe sehr oft benutze, habe ich immer einzelne Einheiten hergestellt, um sicherzustellen, dass mein Stoff richtig ausgerichtet ist.

But here is an easier way to do it. I started out with this piece of very directional fabric:

The important thing here is to NOT cut your fabric with the pattern going diagonally, just straight up & down or side to side.

Es ist wichtig, den Stoff nicht diagonal zu schneiden, sondern nur mit dem Muster von oben nach unten oder von Seite zu Seite (siehe Photo oben).

Now continue as you would normally would:  Place two of your small squares on the larger one, sew, cut and press.

Jetzt ganz normal weitermachen: zwei der kleinen Quadrate auf das Hintergrund Stück platzieren,  nähen, schneiden und bügeln.

The next step is also done as usual: take your remaining two squares, place them on bottom corner of your background, sew, cut and press.  You now have two sets of flying geese, with the directional fabric running horizontally in one set, and vertically in the other….

Der nächste Schritt ist auch wie üblich: die letzten zwei kleine Quadrate, auf die untere Ecke des Hintergrundes legen, nähen, schneiden und bügeln. Man hat jetzt zwei Pärchen “flying geese”, wobei das Muster in einem Paar horizontal und in dem anderen vertikal verläuft.

My #1 nephew, Nikolas graduated from high school this year. Not a remarkable fact by itself, until you find out the “rest of the story”.  He was born, and went to school in Greece for all of his schooling.  He passed (with flying colors) end-of-year  & graduation exams in two different languages (valid in two different countries).

Der älteste meiner Neffen, Nikolas hat das Abitur heuer bestanden.  Für sich nicht eine bemerkenswerte Tatsache, aber…. Er wurde in Griechenland geboren, hat sein ganzes Leben lang in Griechenland die Schule besucht und hat dann das Abitur und Universitätsaufnahme Exam in zwei verschiedenen Sprachen gemacht und mit sehr gutem Erfolg bestanden.

Then (because I guess all this was too easy), he moved to Austria to attend University.  Now, stop and think for a moment what all that entails: As an 18-year old, you get on a plane and a few hours later arrive in a different city, enroll in University, open a bank account,  settle your military duty, etc.etc.  He all of a sudden has to run his own household, pay his own bills, in short, run his own life in every sense of the word!

But, I digress…..

Und dann (weil das alles offenbar zu leicht war) ist er alleine nach Österreich übersiedelt um dort auf die Uni zu gehen.  Als 18-jähriger, stieg er in ein Flugzeug und ist ein paar Stunden später in einer fremden Stadt angekommen, hat sich auf der Universität eingeschrieben, ein Bankkonto eröffnet, sich um seinen Militärdienst erkundigt, etc., etc. Und jetzt muss er auch seinen eigenen Haushalt führen: nicht nur putzen und kochen, aber auch Rechnungen bezahlen, sich um Telefon/WiFi erkundigen und anmelden…..

Ich nehme an man merkt ich hab’ den jungen Mann ganz gern?

Aber ich weiche from Thema ab….

A couple of years ago, I apparently started a tradition by making my niece Bianca a graduation quilt.  This year, it was Nikolas’ turn.  He has always liked music and plays the piano..so the pattern I saw (online, free at Art Gallery Fabrics) called “Press Play” seemed almost perfect.  I adjusted the pattern and voila!

Vor ein paar Jahren, habe ich offensichtlich eine Tradition begonnen:  ich habe meiner #1 Nichte (meiner einzigen Nichte) zur Matura (Abitur) eine “Schulabschluss-Quilt” gemacht.  Heuer war Nikolas dran!  Ihm gefällt klassische Musik und er spielt Klavier – und wie ich dann dieses Muster entdeckte fand ich das sehr sehr passend.  Das Muster heisst “Press Play”; ich habe es für ihn adaptiert, und voila!

My Guild, the Tarheel Quilters Guild (in Fayetteville, NC) is holding it’s biennial Quilt Fest April 7 & 8, 2017.  Part of the Quilt Fest is a large Quilt Show (judged), usually displaying approx. 200 quilts.

Meine Gilde, Tarheel Quilters Guild (Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA) organisiert ein Quilt Fest am 7en & 8en April, 2017. Wir haben da auch eine grosse Quilt Show; meistens sind da ca. 200 Quilts.

In our efforts to embrace cultural, geographical and artistic diversity, we are calling on quilters far and wide to enter their quilts!

In unseren Bemühungen kulturelle, geographische, und künstlerische Vielfalt zu umarmen, laden wir Quilter/innen aus der ganzen Welt ein, bei uns mitzumachen!

Snowflake Shimmer QAL – the top is done.

Yvonne’s Snowflake Shimmer Quilt-Along was a quick one – it started in July, and this week we put the top together.  I am loving the speed, and I like this pattern especially.  It is simple to make but impressive in appearance; it lends itself very well to re-sizing (the original is 72″ x 88″) and several of these can be made quite quickly to be used as presents.

Yvonne’s “Snowflake Shimmer Quilt-Along” war ein schnelles Quilt-Along.  Wir habe im Juli damit begonnen, und haben diese Woche die Quilt schon zusammen genäht.  Mir gefällt das Tempo, und das Muster auch.  Es ist einfach aber auch eindrucksvoll; man kann es leicht vergrössern/verkleinern (das Original ist 183cm x 224cm) und weil man die relativ schnell nähen kann, eignet sie sich gut als Geschenk.

Patterned fabrics are not my “thing” and so I am not sure how I feel about this quilt…..maybe what bothers me is that the pattern on the printed fabric appears so linear – I am not sure.  I do like the colors, and I like the contrast.

Bunte Stoffe mit Mustern drauf verwende ich nur selten; ich bin nicht sicher ob mir diese Quilt gefällt. Ich glaube was mich hier stört ist das das Muster so geradlinig ist; mir wäre lieber wenn das so mehr willkürlich wäre.  Die Farben gefallen mir schon, und der Kontrast auch.

Poland – Polen

And there is a new pattern!  Why Poland, you ask?  I have NO idea – there is no rhyme or reason to which country/continent I tackle; I’ve been thinking about Poland lately, so I drew the pattern for it.

Ich habe ein neues Muster!  Warum Polen, fragt man sich?  Ich habe KEINE Ahnung – ich habe kein System nach dem ich diese Blöcke entwerfe; mir ist Polen eingefallen, also hab ich das Muster für Polen entworfen…

Funny enough, as close as Poland is to Austria (where I grew up as a teenager/young adult) I have never been there.  Maybe the next time BHE and I go home, we can take a short trip.

Das merkewürdigste ist, dass so lange ich auch in Österreich gelebt habe, war ich noch nie in Polen.  Vielleicht fahren wir da mal hin, das nächste Mal wenn der Beste-Mann-der-Welt und ich nach Europa fliegen.

Yvonne from Quilting Jetgirl introduced her Quilt-Along a few weeks ago.  In the meantime, we have selected fabric, cut it and last week we began sewing!

Yvonne (Quilting Jetgirl) hat die erste Information über ihr Quilt-Along veröffentlicht. In den letzen paar Wochen, haben wir uns die Stoffe ausgesucht, haben sie zugeschnitten, und jetzt haben wir auch zum Nähen angefangen…

Die folgenden zwei Photos sind meine genähten Blöcke, und auch (weil ich der Versuchung nicht widerstehen konnte) die Blöcke so angeordnet, wie sie in der Quilt aussehen werden.

Yvonne from Quilting Jetgirl introduced her Quilt-Along a little while back.  I really like the design and of course, I LOVE the colors (most of you already know I have a fetish for grey…)

After deciding on the fabrics, it was finally time to start cutting – Yvonne posted the cutting instructions last week.

Nachdem man sich über die Stoffe entschieden hat, war es dann Zeit sie zuzuschneiden.
