Since the advance in personal technology, local libraries have seen a marked decline in attendance. I will admit that I am one of those whose visits to my local library have declined, but I also have several reasons why I still continue going. Here are some of the less obvious ones (some of them VERY quilt related):
Seit wir jetzt alle so viel Technologie haben, sehen unsere Büchereien weniger und weniger Besucher. Ich muss zugeben, dass ich auch dazugehöre und viel weniger persönlich hingehe. Ich habe auch viele Gründe warum ich doch noch hingehe – hier sind ein paar davon (und manche haben mit Patchwork-Steppen schon sehr viel zu tun):
*. Quite often, I come across books (quilt books) that look very enticing to me and that I am very interested in purchasing. Almost always, I first check them out at my local library and give them a “test drive”. Since most libraries are now inter-connected, even if my county’s library does not own the book, they can “borrow” it from another for free and make it available to me.
*. Ich entdecke manchmal Bücher an denen ich prinzipiell Interesse haben würde. Bevor ich sie mir kaufe, leihe ich sie aus der Bücherei aus und schaue sie mir an. Auch wenn meine Bücherei das Buch nicht hat, holt sich die Bücherei das Buch von einer anderen (kostenlos für mich)um es dann an mich weiterzuleiten.
*. Workshops: Even though this are not quilting workshops per se, I am a Longarmer. There is of course, a business component to quilting quilts for others, and/or making custom quilts. The library provides workshops (free of charge) that encompass almost all aspects of small business: from formation of a small business, to tax return preparation, to marketing, to writing proposals, and many many more. In my library, those are usually about 2-3 hours long – time well spent.
*. Seminare: Ich steppe für andere (d.h. sie bringen mir ihre Quilts und ich steppe sie dann auf meiner grossen Maschine). Das ist ein Handwerk, und die Bücherei hat kostenlose Seminare an denen ich teilnehme: wie man einen so kleinen Betrieb korrekt startet, Steuererklärung, Marketing, wie man Angebote schreibt, Kundendienst usw. Die sind ca. 2ß3 Stunden lang und wirklich jede Minute ist gut angelegt.
*. The History Room: I have been, for several years now, been trying to find information on BHE’s biological father. Not an easy task, since recording black history was not exactly a priority in the US until recently…..the history room at our library has been an invaluable resource, and its staff has often pointed me in a direction that I would otherwise not have thought to go….
*. Geschichte: Ich such schon seit einigen Jahren den Vater von meinem Mann. Das ist nicht leicht, denn mein die Ahnenreihe der schwarzen Bevölkerung wurde in den Staaten nicht aufgezeichnet – das hat sich erst in den letzten Jahren geändert )und sehr langsam). Das “History Room” in unserer Bücherei ist unschätzbar und die Leute die dort arbeiten weisen mich immer wieder in eine Richtung an die ich vorher nicht gedacht habe.
*. The Homeless: Since the homeless shelter downtown requires all residents to clear out during the day, during the winter the only place they can go to stay out of the cold is the nearby library. While many may see the influx of this part of the population as an unwelcome sight, I think it is a good thing for several reasons: reading has never hurt anyone, and if even one person gets a bit more educated or learns one more thing that’s great. For those of us who encounter them, it serves as a reminder of how fortunate we are not to be in their position and that we owe to contribute to others in some sort of way. I know this may appear as a simplistic way of viewing the homeless but this is not a post about the complexity of homelessness and so I will leave it at that..
*. Die Obdachlosen: Das Obdachlosenheim schliesst seine Türen jeden morgen und alle Menschen die drin wohnen müssen es verlassen. In der Kälte des Winters, der einige Platy wo sie warm bleiben können ist die Bücherei. Manche sehen den Zustrom von diesen menschen in die Bücherei als unerwünscht, aber ich denke es hat seine Vorteile: das Lesen hat niemandem geschadet und wenn ach ein Mensch was lernt ist das doch gut. Für die von uns die sie dort sehen, ist es eine Mahnung dass wir sehr viel Glück haben nicht in derselben Lage zu sein und dass wir der Menschheit etwas schulden. Ich weiss, dass dieses eine sehr stark vereinfachte Weise des Betrachtens des Obdachlosen erscheint, aber dieser Beitrag ist nicht über die Komplexität der Heimatlosigkeit …..
*. Inspiration: part of what I do, is design paper piecing patterns. I often go to the library and browse through architectural books since I get a lot of inspiration from them. I know, I know I could google anything I want to see….but sometimes, I don’t know what I want to see! I’ll just grab a random book, and usually end up with something that is completely out of my wheelhouse.
*. Inspiration: Ich entwerfe Nähen-auf-Papier Muster. Häufig gehe zur Bibliothek und grase durch Architekturbücher, da ich viel Inspiration von ihnen erhalte.
Ich weiß, dass ich alles googeln könnte, das ich sehen möchte….
aber manchmal, weiss ich nicht, was ich sehen möchte! Ich greife wahllos nach einem Buch und finde meistens etwas, das für mich komplett untypisch ist.
