I have started putting pen to paper and writing actual patterns for some of my original quilt designs. Three of them are already available in my shop, and I am hoping to add more and more of them as time passes.

“Roadwork” is a design that I created to vent some of my frustration with the road construction in our little town. Several of my friends have made this design into quilts of their own.

“Roadwork” ist ein ist ein Muster, dass ich geschrieben habe weil ich so frustriert war mit dem ständigen Strassenbau in unserer kleine Stadt. Mehrere meiner Freundinnen haben dieses Design zu eigenen Quilts verarbeitet.

“Progress Pride” is a wall hanging (or a table topper). It is from a series I am calling “Tutorials with a Purpose” because while it teaches you how to make half-square triangles in several ways, you still end up with a beautiful piece.

“Progress Pride” ist ein Wandbehang (oder ein Tischaufsatz). Es stammt aus einer Serie, die ich “Lernen mit Zweck” nenne, denn während es einem zeigt, wie man halb-quadratische Dreiecke auf verschiedene Arten herstellen kann, gibt es am Ende doch auch ein schönes Stück.

“LoveISLove” celebrates my friends and family that are members of the LGBTQ+ community. I have made this several times, based on requests from people who wanted to give this piece as a gift.

„LoveISLove“ feiert meine Freunde und Familie, die Mitglieder der LGBTQ+-Community sind. Ich habe dieses Stück mehrmals gemacht, (ich hatte Anfragen von Leuten, die dieses Stück als Geschenk geben wollten).

Recently, I had a not-so-pleasant experience….

Neulich hatte ich ein nicht so angenehmes Erlebnis….

A (quilt) designer and artist that I have followed for a few years now, and that I admire (a lot!) and that has a very creative brain and more talent than I can ever imagine, published a paper pieced block of the state of Georgia.

Ein (quilt) Designerin, eine Künstlerin die ich seit einigen Jahren folge und die ich sehr bewundere und die ein sehr kreatives Gehirn und mehr Talent hat, als ich mir je vorstellen kann, veröffentlichte einen Naehen-auf-Papier block des US Bundesstaates Georgia.

The block appears to be very similar (if not the same) as a block I published in 2015 (even the colors were the same!). I tried to contact her thinking there may be some explanation – sometimes we all see things that “stick” in our minds and resurface a while later….

Der Block scheint sehr ähnlich zu sein (wenn nicht der gleiche) wie ein Block den ich 2015 veröffentlicht habe (sogar die Farben waren gleich!). Ich habe versucht sie zu kontaktieren weil ich dachte, es könnte eine logische Erklärung geben – manchmal sehen wir alle Dinge, die in unseren Köpfen “hängen bleiben” und eine Weile später wieder auftauchen ….

My email was non confrontational, saying that great minds sometimes think alike and bringing her attention to my earlier design and linking several blog posts and photos to the message. The quilt that includes this block had been shown at several large quilt shows as well.

Mein E-Mail war nicht konfrontativ und sagte, dass große Köpfe manchmal gleich denken, und machte sie auf mein früheres Design aufmerksam und verknüpfte mehrere Blog-Posts und Fotos mit der Nachricht. Der Quilt, der diesen Block enthält, wurde auch auf mehreren großen Quilt-Shows gezeigt.

There was no response; nothing – not a word. In addition to the obvious (the misappropriation of intellectual property), it was hugely disappointing to find that someone with so much obvious talent, imagination and skill was also somewhat dishonest – which at this point, is the only conclusion that I can draw. Why otherwise would she not have acknowledged my message?

Es kam keine Antwort; nichts – kein Wort. Neben dem offensichtlichen (der Veruntreuung von geistigem Eigentum) war es sehr enttäuschend festzustellen, dass jemand mit so viel offensichtlichem Talent, Vorstellungskraft und Können auch etwas unehrlich war – was jetzt eigentlich die einzige Schlussfolgerung sein kann. Warum sonst hätte sie meine Nachricht nicht zur Kenntnis genommen?

I reported the block to the selling platform as a copyright infringement and am now waiting for their decision, Either way, hugely disappointing…

Ich habe den Block bei der Verkaufsplattform als Urheberrechtsverletzung gemeldet und warte jetzt. Egal was die Entscheidung is, sehr enttäuschend…

Bee Inspired! – I am sharing my reign 😮

I told you a couple of days ago that I was the Queen Bee in September (in my online, international bee).  What I did not disclose, is that I am sharing my reign with Janice.

Ich habe dir vor ein paar Tagen gesagt, dass ich im September die “Königin” bin (in meiner internationalen Online-Quilt-Gruppe). Was ich nicht offengelegt habe, ist, dass ich meine Herrschaft mit Janice teile…. 

Janice requested a house block.  We could chose any color we wanted and any fabrics we wanted as Lon as the block reads predominantly one color.  She also mentioned that she had made a red block that she was not particularly fond of at the end – this block:

Janice bat um einen Hausblock. Wir konnten jede Farbe wählen, die wir wollten und alle Stoffe, die wir wollten, sie wollte nur, dass der Block überwiegend eine Farbe ist. Sie erwähnte auch, dass sie einen roten Block gemacht hatte, der ihr sie am Ende nicht besonders gefiel – diesen Block:

Bee Inspired – It is my turn to post a tutorial

The block I am requesting this month is a simple, back-to-basics kind of block: a log cabin, albeit a “skinny” one.

Der Block, den ich diesen Monat gerne habe würde, ist ein einfacher, grundlegender Block: ein “log cabin” Block, wenn auch ein “magerer”..

The center should be red – as red as you can get it. Red on red is great, but please no other colors at all.  Also no metallic on the red.

Das Zentrum sollte rot sein – so rot wie es geht. Rot auf Rot ist großartig, aber bitte keine anderen Farben. Auch nichts Glänzendes auf dem roten Stoff.

The “logs” should be white and/or off white.  Again, tone on tone is great, patterned fabrics are great (as long as they are tone on tone) but again please no metallics.  Mixing whites and off white is also great.

Die Seiten sollten weiß und/oder fast weiss sein. Auch hier ist Ton in Ton super, gemusterte Stoffe sind toll (solange sie Ton in Ton sind) aber bitte auch hier nichts glänzendes auf diesen Stoffen.

Honestly, I do not understand why EQ labeled the logs from the outside in – I personally would have much preferred to start with A in the center….

Ehrlich gesagt verstehe ich nicht, warum EQ die Logs von außen beschriftet hat – ich persönlich hätte viel lieber mit A in der Mitte angefangen ….

Really, it will probably take you longer to cut the fabric than to construct the block. Have fun!!

Bee Inspired – The Catching Up Episode!

It has been a while since I posted anything….there is a reason for that, but I will elaborate later.

Es ist schon eine Weile her, seit ich etwas gepostet habe … es gibt einen Grund dafür, aber ich werde später näher darauf eingehen.

Today, I want to apologize to my bee-mates for my tardiness and also catch up on blocks that I owe them.

Heute möchte ich mich bei meinen online-Quilt Freundinnen für meine Verspätung entschuldigen und mit den Blöcken nachholen, die ich ihnen schulde.

First, the Wanta Fanta blocks for Karen.  I made enough to cover our friend Kate as well (she is currently ill and cannot sew).  These blocks are technically not late, as long as I get them into the mail before the end of the day!

Zuerst die “Wanta Fanta” Blöcke für Karen. Ich habedie doppelte Menge genäht denn unsere Freundin Kate ist zur Zeit krank und kann nicht nähen. Diese Blöcke sind technisch nicht zu spät, solange ich sie noch vor Ende des Tages in die Post bekomme!

Karen had requested that we do not sew the sections together, so she can mix and match all of our parts into one quilt.

Karen hatte darum gebeten, dass wir die Abschnitte nicht zusammennähen, damit sie alle Teile in einer Decke verteilen kann.

This next block is late (very late) – again, I owe Sue an apology for the tardiness (as I mentioned above, the explanation will follow in a bit).  It is a toadstool, that she requested in July.  I do hope she likes the fabrics; she had requested red for the top, and I think it does “read” red…..I just thought this fabric was sooooooo appropriate for this cute block, that I just had to use it!

Dieser nächste Block ist spät (sehr spät) – wieder schulde ich Sue eine Entschuldigung für die Verspätung (wie ich oben erwähnt habe, wird die Erklärung in Kürze folgen). Es ist ein Pilz, den sie im Juli angefordert hat. Ich hoffe, sie mag die Stoffe; sie wollte einen Roten Pilz haben, und ich denke, dass es rot “liest” ….. Ich fand diesen  dieser Stoff soooooo passend für diesen niedlichen Block!

 

Bee inspired – (by a royal wedding?)

It has been a while since I posted….I keep feeling as if there is always soooo much to do and I have to keep running to catch up!

But then, Velda became Queen Bee in my international online bee and she requested a cake block. We wee to take inspiration from this pattern:

Aber dann wurde Velda Queen Bee in meiner internationalen Online-Biene und sie bat um einen Kuchenblock. Wir möchten uns von diesem Muster inspirieren lassen:

I thought I would take inspiration from (what else?) the Royal Wedding taking place in London this weekend….and so I made an Elderflower Lemon Drip Cake.

Ich dachte, ich würde mich inspirieren lassen von (was noch?) der kleinen Hochzeit, die dieses Wochenende in London stattfindet … und so machte ich einen Holunderblüten-Zitronenkuchen.

I stretched myself as I ordinarily don’t do appliqué (my friend Sana who is a master of it will be probably horrified by this attempt).  Also, my cake appeared to be sitting not completely level while I was applying the drip in my quilt kitchen, because to me it appears a bit off kilter…. 🙂 – I hope Velda will excuse all those flaws!

Ich mache normalerweise keine Applikationen (mein Freundin Sana, der ein Meister-in davon ist, wird wahrscheinlich von diesem Versuch entsetzt sein). Außerdem schien mein Kuchen nicht ganz waagerecht zu sitzen, während ich den Tropf in meiner Quiltküche anwendete, weil er mir etwas schief erscheint … 🙂 – Ich hoffe, Velda wird all diese Fehler entschuldigen!

Harry and Meghan’s wedding cake will be baked by Violet Cakes in London.  In their gallery, you see some “naked” cakes (cakes with minimal frosting on all or some of the cake; so minimal that the cake peeks through the frosting).  In my cake that is represented on the bottom part; the top part is “frosted” (with either cream or fondant, whatever your personal preference) and then the lemon glaze drip is applied on top of that.

Harry und Meghans Hochzeitstorte wird von Violet Cakes in London gebacken. In ihrer Galerie sieht man einige “nackte” Kuchen (Kuchen mit minimaler Zuckerglasur auf dem ganzen oder einem Teil des Kuchens; so minimal, dass der Kuchen durch die Zuckerglasur späht). In meinem Kuchen, ist das auf dem unteren Teil dargestellt; der obere Teil ist “mattiert” (mit Sahne oder Fondant, ganz nach Belieben) und dann wird der Tropf mit der Zitronenglasur darauf aufgetragen.

The royal wedding cake will be decorated with real flowers (and maybe lemons?) and perhaps Velda will elect to decorate this one the same way after quilting?

Die prinzliche Hochzeitstorte wird mit echten Blumen (und vielleicht Zitronen?) dekoriert und vielleicht wird Velda diese Torte nach dem Quilten auch so dekorieren?

I know I say this EVERY month, but I really like this block and can’t wait to see the quilt!

Ich weiß, ich sage das jeden Monat, aber ich mag diesen Block wirklich und kann es kaum erwarten, die Decke zu sehen!

Bee Inspired – for Emily

Emily wants a paper-pieced (yeah!) red, white and blue star in her month.  This pattern is from Wombat Quilts (Emily got permission for us to use it) – we all like it a lot!

Emily will einen rot-weiß-blauen Stern in ihrem Monat. Dieses Muster stammt von Wombat Quilts (Emily hat Erlaubnis bekommen, es zu benutzen) – uns gefällt er sehr!

My block is done (in the first week no less!) and will be on it’s way to Emily soon.

Mein Block ist fertig (in der ersten Woche!) und wird bald auf dem Weg zu Emily sein.

 

“Skinny” Pana Cotta

Several of my friends are on diets and are always on the lookout for “skinny” (low fat/ low carb/low sugar or all three) recipes.  Today’s recipe is for Panna Cotta, which is a custard-like dessert.  It does not contain eggs and is usually made of cream, sugar and a thickening agent.  This recipe also happens to be gluten-free and dairy free.

Einige meiner Freunde sind auf Diät und sind immer auf der Suche nach “dünnen” (fettarm / Low Carb / wenig Zucker oder alle drei) Rezepten. Das heutige Rezept ist für Panna Cotta, ein Pudding-ähnliches Dessert. Es enthält keine Eier und wird normalerweise aus Sahne, Zucker und einem Verdickungsmittel hergestellt. Mein Rezept ist auch glutenfrei und enthält keine Milchprodukte.

Ingredients

Zutaten

3 cups of regular (unflavored) sugar free almond milk
2 Envelopes unflavored Gelatin
2/3 – 3/4 cup Splenda (if you prefer a different sweetener, use
the the equivalent of 2/3 – 3/4 cup sugar)
1/4 cup of a fruit spread; I used Welch’s Naturals.

705 ml Mandel Milch (ungesüsst)
3 Päckchen Gelatine
230g – 250g Splenda (wenn Sie einen anderen Süßstoff bevorzugen, verwenden Sie
das äquivalent von 2/3 – 3/4 Tasse Zucker)
ca. 100g Fruchtaufstrich/Marmelade (mit reduziertem Zucker)

Preparation:

Place half of the almond milk and the gelatin in a pan; heat on low.
Stir constantly until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
Add the sweetener and stir to dissolve.
Remove from the heat and add the remaining almond milk.
Put 2 tsp of fruit spread on the bottom of six ramekins or small bowls. Pour the almond milk mixture slowly into the ramekins (as to not disturb the fruit spread). Chill until well set (approx. 3 hours) or overnight.

Zubereitung:

Die halbe Mandelmilch und Gelatine in einem Topf auf mittlere Hitze erwärmen, bis die Gelatine komplett aufgelöst ist. (man muss ständig rühren).
Den Süßstoff hinzufügen und so lange rühren bis er auch aufgelöst ist.
Von dem Herd nehmen und die restliche Mandelmilch hinzufügen.
Zwei Tl Marmelade in den Boden von sechs Schüsselchen geben, und dann die Mandel Milch Mischung langsam in die Schüsselchen giessen.  Die Schüsselchen in den Kühlschrank stellen und dort mindestens drei Stunden kühlen lassen.

NOTE:  If you want to further reduce the points/calorie value, use fresh fruit in the bottom of your ramekins instead of fruit spread.

Hinweis: Wenn Sie die Punkte / Kalorienwerte weiter reduzieren möchten, verwenden Sie frisches Obst auf dem Boden Ihrer Schüsselchen anstelle von Fruchtaufstrich.

Weight Watchers Points: 3/portion (The fruit spread is two points, so if you replace that with fresh fruit, the whole dessert drops to one point).

Ernährungsinformation:

Weight Watchers Punkte: 3 / Portion (Der Fruchtaufstrich ist zwei Punkte, wenn Sie also das mit frischem Obst ersetzen, fällt das ganze Dessert auf einen Punkt).

Bee Inspired – in February (for Anne)

When I saw the block that Anne decided on for “Bee Inspired” in February – I laughed out loud!  I had been working on a new class sample for my Modern Improv class and I had just made this block!

Als ich den Block sah, den Anne im Februar für “Bee Inspired” ausgewählt hatte, habe ich laut gelacht! Ich hatte an einem neuen Klassenbeispiel für meine Modern Improv-Klasse gearbeitet und ich hatte gerade diesen Block gemacht!

Mir gefällt dieser Block sehr (aber ich glaube ich sage das auch jeden Monat?)

So, I went to work to make another one (a smaller one, as Anne’s should only be 12.5″).

Also ging ich an die Arbeit, um noch einen zu nähen (eine kleineren, denn Anne’s sollte nur 12,5 sein).

Anne had given us the option of crossing the strips, but I like them better when they do not cross; they remind me of bamboo stalks…and I like bamboo.

Anne hatte uns die Möglichkeit gegeben, die Streifen zu überqueren, aber ich mag sie besser, wenn sie sich nicht kreuzen; sie erinnern mich an Bamboo … und ich mir gefällt Bamboo.

Bee Inspired – for Emily

When Emily requested a “book shelf” block with a theme, I knew immediately that mine was going to be a Harry Potter block (unless someone else snapped up the idea first).  Luckily, no one did and I was able to do it.

Als Emily einen “Bücherregal” -Block mit einem Thema anforderte, wusste ich sofort, dass meiner ein Harry-Potter-Block sein würde (es sei denn, jemand anderer hatte die Idee zuerst aufgenommen). Zum Glück war ich die einzige (oder die erste?) die diese Idee hatte….

I decided to print the book spines and then construct each of the books out of a different fabric.  Each book is also a different width (since each of the books has a vastly different number of pages).

Ich beschloss, die Buchrücken zu drucken und dann jedes der Bücher aus einem anderen Stoff zu konstruieren. Jedes Buch hat auch eine andere Breite (da jedes der Bücher eine sehr unterschiedliche Anzahl von Seiten hat).

Designing the book spines was a lot of fun (and also VERY time consuming).  Everything from the font, the colors, the design elements, the positioning of each element or text  became major decisions as I obsessed over them.  I am satisfied with the result, given the limitations of my printer…..I would have liked to incorporate the color of the fabric into my spines, but my printer cannot handle that volume of color saturation on fabric.

Die Gestaltung der Buchrücken hat viel Spaß gemacht (und war auch sehr zeitaufwendig). Alles von der Schriftart, den Farben, den Designelementen, der Positionierung jedes Elements oder Textes waren sehr wichtige Entscheidungen! Ich bin mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden, angesichts der Einschränkungen meines Druckers ….. Ich hätte gerne die Farbe des Stoffes in meine Buchrücken integriert, aber mein Drucker kann diese Menge von Farbsättigung auf Stoff nicht verarbeiten.

I left Emily a little extra fabric on the top and the right side so she can trim the block and make it fit into her quilt.  I do hope she likes it….(and forgives my tardiness)

Ich habe Emily ein wenig extra Stoff oben und auch rechts gelassen, damit sie den Block so zuschneiden kann wie sie ihn braucht. Ich hoffe wirklich, er gefällt ihr und sie vergibt meine Verspätung.
